All that glitters

…is definitely not gold.

People seem to be so happy and content in their lives as long as they are mere acquaintances. Once you get to know them, you find out it was just the fake facade. Deep inside, they have problems which are probably much bigger in magnitude than the ones which you consider to be fatal.

B is a bubbly woman, always cheerful and very energetic. Her dad died when she was 9. Her mom wasnt able to find a well paid job and they were forced to sell off their house, their car and other possessions. Her mom couldnt take it all and ended up getting a malignant cancer just 4 years later. B started working when she was only 17 and became the sole bread earner for her family. Just 2 years later her mom died too when B was merely in the first year of BSc. B is a strong woman. She continued with her education while working and is now doing her MPhill from Karachi University.

S was my student and that too a good one. She has a cancer in her uterus and she is only 21. Her dad died when she was 14 in a road accident that also left her mom with a hip fracture that hasnt healed perfectly as yet. Her elder brother married and left them because he couldnt support them. Her younger brother is only 17 now.

And you thought you were going through a lot?

But thats not the only point that I wanted to make with this post. There was something else too. Do you think people like S and B have done something wrong to be having so many different problems in life? Or its just a test from Allah (SWT)?

I am sure you have met, seen, been with people who think that if they are successful, they are doing everything correct…May Allah (SWT) help us all from falling into this trap of the Shaitan. Here’s a great video by Baba Ali.

  1. Well, there is no such thing is failure, and same for the success. If anybody is in trouble, there are lot other people who are more in trouble. On the other hand, If anybody think himself successful, there are lot other people who are more successful in their life. So Always thanks Allah million a times daily, What he has given to you is perfect….

  2. yeah appearances can be misleading..but why are we assuming happiness or misery to be relative?…if i am miserable over the loss of something, seeing another grieving over a much bigger loss wouldnt lessen my misery..or would it?
    *scratching head*

  3. @ Khurram
    welcome to the blog πŸ™‚
true, no one has a perfect life cuz perfection is impossible to achieve and I thank Allah (SWT) for that cuz that would have only made life even worse.

    @ pinki
u are right in a way but wat i wanted to point out was that sabar is the key. wen u know someone is suffering far more than you for things which u take for granted (think IDPs and food), u end up thanking Allah (SWT) for watever He has bestowed upon you. There is a hadeeth, i dont remember the exact wordings but it was something like this: always look at people higher to u in emaan (so that u can strive for improvement) and lower to u in wealth (so that u can thank Allah(SWT) for wat you have rather than sulk for wat u dont have).

  4. They haven’t done anything wrong…this is what life is all about. Everyone is different.

Vey well said … Saber is the key.

  5. everything is so misleading i feel totally off track…
    grr..
but alhmdullilah i m not half as mad as they tell me.
and yes there will be lols on this but who cares…

    i m just plainly miserable

  6. Another great post. The important thing to remember is that bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. Life is a test where the believers are expected to be patient in the face of adversity.

if only everyone could understand that there are certain things that happen simply to test you. I heard somewhere (I think its a saying by Hazrat Ali (RA) but not sure) that if everything is going right in your life, then it means you are doing something wrong.

    @ AD
just hold on, things will soon be great for you insha Allah πŸ™‚

    @ jingoist
precisely….we just dont understand how blessed we are until we meet people who are going through soo much in life

    @ farooq

    @ Anas

  8. oh there’s something that I have just shared in a new post but it aint something that I have written myself….ill be writing one insha Allah over the week end πŸ™‚

  9. So true! Once you get to know a person, thats when you realize what that person is going through actually…
Ummah Films are just too good. The way he presents and the examples he gives are just great (Y). A nice share (Y).
